Elite Skier Uses OmniPod(R) Insulin Management System at World Championships

Kris Freeman Joins Growing Ranks of Professional Athletes Who Use the OmniPod System to Manage their Diabetes

BEDFORD, Mass., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Kris Freeman, one of the country's top professional cross-country skiers, is competing on behalf of the US in the Skiing World Championships this month. As a world-class athlete, Freeman intends to medal, but he has already faced a more daunting challenger: Type I diabetes. Diabetes doesn't keep Freeman from performing at the top of his sport, thanks in part to the OmniPod® Insulin Management System, a revolutionary insulin infusion system with no tubing.

"As a professional athlete, I can't afford to worry about my diabetes when I'm competing, and with the OmniPod, I don't have to," said Freeman. "The OmniPod's innovative, tubing-free design is durable enough for the toughest conditions I face during competition. And off the slopes, it gives me freedom to live an active, healthy life, while maintaining great control of my diabetes."

Freeman, the number one Nordic distance skier in the United States, is already a twelve-time national champion, three-time Olympian, and the second most successful American cross-country skier of all time. In 2003, less than three years after his diagnosis with diabetes, Freeman became the first American to ever win the Under 23 World Championships and followed that success with a fourth place finish in the Cross-Country World Championships. In 2004, Freeman finished sixth and fifth in two consecutive World Cups, the best finish by an American in 20 years, and became the first American ever to be ranked in the top 20.

Freeman isn't the only professional athlete to enjoy the freedom of the OmniPod System and its innovative design. Other top athletes who use the OmniPod include:

    -- Triathlete Jay Hewitt
    -- Mountaineer Lisa Seaman
-- Team Type 1, a team of professional cyclists who have diabetes
    -- Dolphin Trainer Robyn Cox
