Dr. Frederick has served on our Board of Directors since October 2020. He is serving as Interim President of Howard University effective September 1, 2025. He is the President Emeritus of Howard University, having previously served as the President from July 2014 to September 2023, and the distinguished Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine. From November 2024 to August 2025, Dr. Frederick was the Interim Chief Executive Officer of the American Cancer Society and it's advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. Prior to being appointed president in 2014, Dr. Frederick served as Howard University’s Provost and Chief Academic Officer.
Dr. Frederick is a practicing surgeon, distinguished researcher and scholar, and the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, abstracts, and editorials. He has received several awards for his scholarship and public service and conducts lectures to medical students and residents of Howard’s College of Medicine. Dr. Frederick belongs to numerous surgical organizations, including the American Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons and the National Academy of Medicine.
As a widely recognized expert on disparities in healthcare and medical education, his medical research focuses on narrowing racial, ethnic, and gender disparities in cancer care outcomes among African Americans and other underrepresented groups. Dr. Frederick has served as the principal investigator for major collaborations with the National Cancer Institute and Johns Hopkins University, as well as several national minority-serving oncology programs.
He received his Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Medicine, and Master of Business Administration from Howard University. Dr. Frederick also serves on the Board of Directors of Agostini Limited, Humana Inc., Tempus AI, Inc., and Workday, Inc., as well as Mutual of America Life Insurance Company and serves as a senior advisor for Blackstone Inc. and other privately held companies and charitable organizations.
